How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 44 = 6.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 6.6 ÷ 44 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/44, so part = 15 × 44 ÷ 100 = 6.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15%*44. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

6.6 is the 15% share of 44. The remaining 85% is 37.4, and the two parts add back up to 44.

Discounts: 15% off an item priced $44 saves $6.6, so you pay $37.4.

Adding and taking away 15%

Increasing 44 by 15% gives 50.6 and decreasing it by 15% gives 37.4. These do not cancel out: raising 44 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 43.01, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
