How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 44 ÷ 100 = 0.44
  2. Multiply: 0.44 × 15 = 6.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 6.6 ÷ 15 × 100 = 44%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 44/100 = part/15, so part = 44 × 15 ÷ 100 = 6.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =44%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

6.6 is the 44% share of 15. The remaining 56% is 8.4, and the two parts add back up to 15.

Discounts: 44% off an item priced $15 saves $6.6, so you pay $8.4.

Adding and taking away 44%

Increasing 15 by 44% gives 21.6 and decreasing it by 44% gives 8.4. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 44% and then lowering the result by 44% ends at 12.096, because the second 44% is taken of a bigger number.
