How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
- Multiply: 0.15 × 58 = 8.7
- Check: Work backwards: 8.7 ÷ 58 × 100 = 15%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/58, so part = 15 × 58 ÷ 100 = 8.7. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =15%*58. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
8.7 is the 15% share of 58. The remaining 85% is 49.3, and the two parts add back up to 58.
Discounts: 15% off an item priced $58 saves $8.7, so you pay $49.3.
Adding and taking away 15%
Increasing 58 by 15% gives 66.7 and decreasing it by 15% gives 49.3. These do not cancel out: raising 58 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 56.695, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
