How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 58 ÷ 100 = 0.58
  2. Multiply: 0.58 × 15 = 8.7
  3. Check: Work backwards: 8.7 ÷ 15 × 100 = 58%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 58/100 = part/15, so part = 58 × 15 ÷ 100 = 8.7. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =58%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

8.7 is the 58% share of 15. The remaining 42% is 6.3, and the two parts add back up to 15.

Discounts: 58% off an item priced $15 saves $8.7, so you pay $6.3.

Adding and taking away 58%

Increasing 15 by 58% gives 23.7 and decreasing it by 58% gives 6.3. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 58% and then lowering the result by 58% ends at 9.954, because the second 58% is taken of a bigger number.
