How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 6 = 0.9
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.9 ÷ 6 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/6, so part = 15 × 6 ÷ 100 = 0.9. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15%*6. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.9 is the 15% share of 6. The remaining 85% is 5.1, and the two parts add back up to 6.

Discounts: 15% off an item priced $6 saves $0.9, so you pay $5.1.

Adding and taking away 15%

Increasing 6 by 15% gives 6.9 and decreasing it by 15% gives 5.1. These do not cancel out: raising 6 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 5.865, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
