How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 6 ÷ 100 = 0.06
  2. Multiply: 0.06 × 15 = 0.9
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.9 ÷ 15 × 100 = 6%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 6/100 = part/15, so part = 6 × 15 ÷ 100 = 0.9. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =6%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.9 is the 6% share of 15. The remaining 94% is 14.1, and the two parts add back up to 15.

Discounts: 6% off an item priced $15 saves $0.9, so you pay $14.1.

Adding and taking away 6%

Increasing 15 by 6% gives 15.9 and decreasing it by 6% gives 14.1. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 6% and then lowering the result by 6% ends at 14.946, because the second 6% is taken of a bigger number.
