How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 63 = 9.45
  3. Check: Work backwards: 9.45 ÷ 63 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/63, so part = 15 × 63 ÷ 100 = 9.45. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15%*63. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

9.45 is the 15% share of 63. The remaining 85% is 53.55, and the two parts add back up to 63.

Discounts: 15% off an item priced $63 saves $9.45, so you pay $53.55.

Adding and taking away 15%

Increasing 63 by 15% gives 72.45 and decreasing it by 15% gives 53.55. These do not cancel out: raising 63 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 61.5825, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
