How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 67 = 10.05
  3. Check: Work backwards: 10.05 ÷ 67 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/67, so part = 15 × 67 ÷ 100 = 10.05. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15%*67. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

10.05 is the 15% share of 67. The remaining 85% is 56.95, and the two parts add back up to 67.

Discounts: 15% off an item priced $67 saves $10.05, so you pay $56.95.

Adding and taking away 15%

Increasing 67 by 15% gives 77.05 and decreasing it by 15% gives 56.95. These do not cancel out: raising 67 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 65.4925, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
