How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 9 = 1.35
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.35 ÷ 9 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/9, so part = 15 × 9 ÷ 100 = 1.35. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15%*9. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.35 is the 15% share of 9. The remaining 85% is 7.65, and the two parts add back up to 9.

Discounts: 15% off an item priced $9 saves $1.35, so you pay $7.65.

Adding and taking away 15%

Increasing 9 by 15% gives 10.35 and decreasing it by 15% gives 7.65. These do not cancel out: raising 9 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 8.7975, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
