How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 16 ÷ 100 = 0.16
- Multiply: 0.16 × 40 = 6.4
- Check: Work backwards: 6.4 ÷ 40 × 100 = 16%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 16/100 = part/40, so part = 16 × 40 ÷ 100 = 6.4. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =16%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
6.4 is the 16% share of 40. The remaining 84% is 33.6, and the two parts add back up to 40.
Discounts: 16% off an item priced $40 saves $6.4, so you pay $33.6.
Adding and taking away 16%
Increasing 40 by 16% gives 46.4 and decreasing it by 16% gives 33.6. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 16% and then lowering the result by 16% ends at 38.976, because the second 16% is taken of a bigger number.
