How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 16 ÷ 100 = 0.16
  2. Multiply: 0.16 × 64 = 10.24
  3. Check: Work backwards: 10.24 ÷ 64 × 100 = 16%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 16/100 = part/64, so part = 16 × 64 ÷ 100 = 10.24. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =16%*64. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

10.24 is the 16% share of 64. The remaining 84% is 53.76, and the two parts add back up to 64.

Discounts: 16% off an item priced $64 saves $10.24, so you pay $53.76.

Adding and taking away 16%

Increasing 64 by 16% gives 74.24 and decreasing it by 16% gives 53.76. These do not cancel out: raising 64 by 16% and then lowering the result by 16% ends at 62.3616, because the second 16% is taken of a bigger number.
