How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 17 ÷ 100 = 0.17
  2. Multiply: 0.17 × 15 = 2.55
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.55 ÷ 15 × 100 = 17%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 17/100 = part/15, so part = 17 × 15 ÷ 100 = 2.55. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =17%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.55 is the 17% share of 15. The remaining 83% is 12.45, and the two parts add back up to 15.

Discounts: 17% off an item priced $15 saves $2.55, so you pay $12.45.

Adding and taking away 17%

Increasing 15 by 17% gives 17.55 and decreasing it by 17% gives 12.45. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 17% and then lowering the result by 17% ends at 14.5665, because the second 17% is taken of a bigger number.
