How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 18 ÷ 100 = 0.18
  2. Multiply: 0.18 × 100 = 18
  3. Check: Work backwards: 18 ÷ 100 × 100 = 18%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 18/100 = part/100, so part = 18 × 100 ÷ 100 = 18. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =18%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

18 is the 18% share of 100. The remaining 82% is 82, and the two parts add back up to 100.

Discounts: 18% off an item priced $100 saves $18, so you pay $82.

Adding and taking away 18%

Increasing 100 by 18% gives 118 and decreasing it by 18% gives 82. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 18% and then lowering the result by 18% ends at 96.76, because the second 18% is taken of a bigger number.
