How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
  2. Multiply: 0.02 × 12 = 0.24
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.24 ÷ 12 × 100 = 2%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/12, so part = 2 × 12 ÷ 100 = 0.24. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =2%*12. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.24 is the 2% share of 12. The remaining 98% is 11.76, and the two parts add back up to 12.

Discounts: 2% off an item priced $12 saves $0.24, so you pay $11.76.

Adding and taking away 2%

Increasing 12 by 2% gives 12.24 and decreasing it by 2% gives 11.76. These do not cancel out: raising 12 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 11.9952, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.
