How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
- Multiply: 0.02 × 14 = 0.28
- Check: Work backwards: 0.28 ÷ 14 × 100 = 2%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/14, so part = 2 × 14 ÷ 100 = 0.28. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =2%*14. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.28 is the 2% share of 14. The remaining 98% is 13.72, and the two parts add back up to 14.
Discounts: 2% off an item priced $14 saves $0.28, so you pay $13.72.
Adding and taking away 2%
Increasing 14 by 2% gives 14.28 and decreasing it by 2% gives 13.72. These do not cancel out: raising 14 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 13.9944, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 14% of 2. 2% of 14 and 14% of 2 are always equal (both are 2 × 14 ÷ 100 = 0.28), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
