How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
- Multiply: 0.02 × 33 = 0.66
- Check: Work backwards: 0.66 ÷ 33 × 100 = 2%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/33, so part = 2 × 33 ÷ 100 = 0.66. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =2%*33. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.66 is the 2% share of 33. The remaining 98% is 32.34, and the two parts add back up to 33.
Discounts: 2% off an item priced $33 saves $0.66, so you pay $32.34.
Adding and taking away 2%
Increasing 33 by 2% gives 33.66 and decreasing it by 2% gives 32.34. These do not cancel out: raising 33 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 32.9868, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.
