How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
  2. Multiply: 0.02 × 35 = 0.7
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.7 ÷ 35 × 100 = 2%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/35, so part = 2 × 35 ÷ 100 = 0.7. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =2%*35. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.7 is the 2% share of 35. The remaining 98% is 34.3, and the two parts add back up to 35.

Discounts: 2% off an item priced $35 saves $0.7, so you pay $34.3.

Adding and taking away 2%

Increasing 35 by 2% gives 35.7 and decreasing it by 2% gives 34.3. These do not cancel out: raising 35 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 34.986, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.
