How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
- Multiply: 0.02 × 42 = 0.84
- Check: Work backwards: 0.84 ÷ 42 × 100 = 2%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/42, so part = 2 × 42 ÷ 100 = 0.84. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =2%*42. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.84 is the 2% share of 42. The remaining 98% is 41.16, and the two parts add back up to 42.
Discounts: 2% off an item priced $42 saves $0.84, so you pay $41.16.
Adding and taking away 2%
Increasing 42 by 2% gives 42.84 and decreasing it by 2% gives 41.16. These do not cancel out: raising 42 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 41.9832, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 42% of 2. 2% of 42 and 42% of 2 are always equal (both are 2 × 42 ÷ 100 = 0.84), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
