How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
  2. Multiply: 0.02 × 44 = 0.88
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.88 ÷ 44 × 100 = 2%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/44, so part = 2 × 44 ÷ 100 = 0.88. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =2%*44. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.88 is the 2% share of 44. The remaining 98% is 43.12, and the two parts add back up to 44.

Discounts: 2% off an item priced $44 saves $0.88, so you pay $43.12.

Adding and taking away 2%

Increasing 44 by 2% gives 44.88 and decreasing it by 2% gives 43.12. These do not cancel out: raising 44 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 43.9824, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.
