How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 44 ÷ 100 = 0.44
- Multiply: 0.44 × 2 = 0.88
- Check: Work backwards: 0.88 ÷ 2 × 100 = 44%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 44/100 = part/2, so part = 44 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.88. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =44%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.88 is the 44% share of 2. The remaining 56% is 1.12, and the two parts add back up to 2.
Discounts: 44% off an item priced $2 saves $0.88, so you pay $1.12.
Adding and taking away 44%
Increasing 2 by 44% gives 2.88 and decreasing it by 44% gives 1.12. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 44% and then lowering the result by 44% ends at 1.6128, because the second 44% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 2% of 44. 44% of 2 and 2% of 44 are always equal (both are 44 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.88), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
