How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
- Multiply: 0.02 × 48 = 0.96
- Check: Work backwards: 0.96 ÷ 48 × 100 = 2%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/48, so part = 2 × 48 ÷ 100 = 0.96. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =2%*48. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.96 is the 2% share of 48. The remaining 98% is 47.04, and the two parts add back up to 48.
Discounts: 2% off an item priced $48 saves $0.96, so you pay $47.04.
Adding and taking away 2%
Increasing 48 by 2% gives 48.96 and decreasing it by 2% gives 47.04. These do not cancel out: raising 48 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 47.9808, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 48% of 2. 2% of 48 and 48% of 2 are always equal (both are 2 × 48 ÷ 100 = 0.96), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
