How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 48 ÷ 100 = 0.48
- Multiply: 0.48 × 2 = 0.96
- Check: Work backwards: 0.96 ÷ 2 × 100 = 48%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 48/100 = part/2, so part = 48 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.96. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =48%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.96 is the 48% share of 2. The remaining 52% is 1.04, and the two parts add back up to 2.
Discounts: 48% off an item priced $2 saves $0.96, so you pay $1.04.
Adding and taking away 48%
Increasing 2 by 48% gives 2.96 and decreasing it by 48% gives 1.04. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 48% and then lowering the result by 48% ends at 1.5392, because the second 48% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 2% of 48. 48% of 2 and 2% of 48 are always equal (both are 48 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.96), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
