How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
  2. Multiply: 0.02 × 66 = 1.32
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.32 ÷ 66 × 100 = 2%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/66, so part = 2 × 66 ÷ 100 = 1.32. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =2%*66. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.32 is the 2% share of 66. The remaining 98% is 64.68, and the two parts add back up to 66.

Discounts: 2% off an item priced $66 saves $1.32, so you pay $64.68.

Adding and taking away 2%

Increasing 66 by 2% gives 67.32 and decreasing it by 2% gives 64.68. These do not cancel out: raising 66 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 65.9736, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.
