How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 66 ÷ 100 = 0.66
- Multiply: 0.66 × 2 = 1.32
- Check: Work backwards: 1.32 ÷ 2 × 100 = 66%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 66/100 = part/2, so part = 66 × 2 ÷ 100 = 1.32. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =66%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.32 is the 66% share of 2. The remaining 34% is 0.68, and the two parts add back up to 2.
Discounts: 66% off an item priced $2 saves $1.32, so you pay $0.68.
Adding and taking away 66%
Increasing 2 by 66% gives 3.32 and decreasing it by 66% gives 0.68. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 66% and then lowering the result by 66% ends at 1.1288, because the second 66% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 2% of 66. 66% of 2 and 2% of 66 are always equal (both are 66 × 2 ÷ 100 = 1.32), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
