How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
  2. Multiply: 0.02 × 81 = 1.62
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.62 ÷ 81 × 100 = 2%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/81, so part = 2 × 81 ÷ 100 = 1.62. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =2%*81. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.62 is the 2% share of 81. The remaining 98% is 79.38, and the two parts add back up to 81.

Discounts: 2% off an item priced $81 saves $1.62, so you pay $79.38.

Adding and taking away 2%

Increasing 81 by 2% gives 82.62 and decreasing it by 2% gives 79.38. These do not cancel out: raising 81 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 80.9676, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.
