How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
- Multiply: 0.02 × 85 = 1.7
- Check: Work backwards: 1.7 ÷ 85 × 100 = 2%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/85, so part = 2 × 85 ÷ 100 = 1.7. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =2%*85. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.7 is the 2% share of 85. The remaining 98% is 83.3, and the two parts add back up to 85.
Discounts: 2% off an item priced $85 saves $1.7, so you pay $83.3.
Adding and taking away 2%
Increasing 85 by 2% gives 86.7 and decreasing it by 2% gives 83.3. These do not cancel out: raising 85 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 84.966, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 85% of 2. 2% of 85 and 85% of 2 are always equal (both are 2 × 85 ÷ 100 = 1.7), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
