How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 85 ÷ 100 = 0.85
  2. Multiply: 0.85 × 2 = 1.7
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.7 ÷ 2 × 100 = 85%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 85/100 = part/2, so part = 85 × 2 ÷ 100 = 1.7. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =85%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.7 is the 85% share of 2. The remaining 15% is 0.3, and the two parts add back up to 2.

Discounts: 85% off an item priced $2 saves $1.7, so you pay $0.3.

Adding and taking away 85%

Increasing 2 by 85% gives 3.7 and decreasing it by 85% gives 0.3. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 85% and then lowering the result by 85% ends at 0.555, because the second 85% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 2% of 85. 85% of 2 and 2% of 85 are always equal (both are 85 × 2 ÷ 100 = 1.7), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
