How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 20 ÷ 100 = 0.2
- Multiply: 0.2 × 225 = 45
- Check: Work backwards: 45 ÷ 225 × 100 = 20%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 20/100 = part/225, so part = 20 × 225 ÷ 100 = 45. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =20%*225. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
45 is the 20% share of 225. The remaining 80% is 180, and the two parts add back up to 225.
Discounts: 20% off an item priced $225 saves $45, so you pay $180.
Adding and taking away 20%
Increasing 225 by 20% gives 270 and decreasing it by 20% gives 180. These do not cancel out: raising 225 by 20% and then lowering the result by 20% ends at 216, because the second 20% is taken of a bigger number.
