How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 200 ÷ 100 = 2
- Multiply: 2 × 80 = 160
- Check: Work backwards: 160 ÷ 80 × 100 = 200%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 200/100 = part/80, so part = 200 × 80 ÷ 100 = 160. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =200%*80. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
Because 200% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 80: it is 2 times 80.
Mark-ups: pricing an item at 200% of its $80 cost means selling it for $160.
Adding and taking away 200%
Increasing 80 by 200% gives 240. These do not cancel out: raising 80 by 200% and then lowering the result by 200% ends at -240, because the second 200% is taken of a bigger number.
