How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 21 ÷ 100 = 0.21
  2. Multiply: 0.21 × 12 = 2.52
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.52 ÷ 12 × 100 = 21%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 21/100 = part/12, so part = 21 × 12 ÷ 100 = 2.52. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =21%*12. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.52 is the 21% share of 12. The remaining 79% is 9.48, and the two parts add back up to 12.

Discounts: 21% off an item priced $12 saves $2.52, so you pay $9.48.

Adding and taking away 21%

Increasing 12 by 21% gives 14.52 and decreasing it by 21% gives 9.48. These do not cancel out: raising 12 by 21% and then lowering the result by 21% ends at 11.4708, because the second 21% is taken of a bigger number.
