How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 21 ÷ 100 = 0.21
- Multiply: 0.21 × 4 = 0.84
- Check: Work backwards: 0.84 ÷ 4 × 100 = 21%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 21/100 = part/4, so part = 21 × 4 ÷ 100 = 0.84. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =21%*4. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.84 is the 21% share of 4. The remaining 79% is 3.16, and the two parts add back up to 4.
Discounts: 21% off an item priced $4 saves $0.84, so you pay $3.16.
Adding and taking away 21%
Increasing 4 by 21% gives 4.84 and decreasing it by 21% gives 3.16. These do not cancel out: raising 4 by 21% and then lowering the result by 21% ends at 3.8236, because the second 21% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 4% of 21. 21% of 4 and 4% of 21 are always equal (both are 21 × 4 ÷ 100 = 0.84), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
