How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 22 ÷ 100 = 0.22
  2. Multiply: 0.22 × 15 = 3.3
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3.3 ÷ 15 × 100 = 22%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 22/100 = part/15, so part = 22 × 15 ÷ 100 = 3.3. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =22%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

3.3 is the 22% share of 15. The remaining 78% is 11.7, and the two parts add back up to 15.

Discounts: 22% off an item priced $15 saves $3.3, so you pay $11.7.

Adding and taking away 22%

Increasing 15 by 22% gives 18.3 and decreasing it by 22% gives 11.7. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 22% and then lowering the result by 22% ends at 14.274, because the second 22% is taken of a bigger number.
