How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 22 ÷ 100 = 0.22
- Multiply: 0.22 × 50 = 11
- Check: Work backwards: 11 ÷ 50 × 100 = 22%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 22/100 = part/50, so part = 22 × 50 ÷ 100 = 11. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =22%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
11 is the 22% share of 50. The remaining 78% is 39, and the two parts add back up to 50.
Discounts: 22% off an item priced $50 saves $11, so you pay $39.
Adding and taking away 22%
Increasing 50 by 22% gives 61 and decreasing it by 22% gives 39. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 22% and then lowering the result by 22% ends at 47.58, because the second 22% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 50% of 22. 22% of 50 and 50% of 22 are always equal (both are 22 × 50 ÷ 100 = 11), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
