How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 22 ÷ 100 = 0.22
  2. Multiply: 0.22 × 90 = 19.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 19.8 ÷ 90 × 100 = 22%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 22/100 = part/90, so part = 22 × 90 ÷ 100 = 19.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =22%*90. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

19.8 is the 22% share of 90. The remaining 78% is 70.2, and the two parts add back up to 90.

Discounts: 22% off an item priced $90 saves $19.8, so you pay $70.2.

Adding and taking away 22%

Increasing 90 by 22% gives 109.8 and decreasing it by 22% gives 70.2. These do not cancel out: raising 90 by 22% and then lowering the result by 22% ends at 85.644, because the second 22% is taken of a bigger number.
