How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 23 ÷ 100 = 0.23
  2. Multiply: 0.23 × 22 = 5.06
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.06 ÷ 22 × 100 = 23%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 23/100 = part/22, so part = 23 × 22 ÷ 100 = 5.06. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =23%*22. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.06 is the 23% share of 22. The remaining 77% is 16.94, and the two parts add back up to 22.

Discounts: 23% off an item priced $22 saves $5.06, so you pay $16.94.

Adding and taking away 23%

Increasing 22 by 23% gives 27.06 and decreasing it by 23% gives 16.94. These do not cancel out: raising 22 by 23% and then lowering the result by 23% ends at 20.8362, because the second 23% is taken of a bigger number.
