How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 23 ÷ 100 = 0.23
- Multiply: 0.23 × 3 = 0.69
- Check: Work backwards: 0.69 ÷ 3 × 100 = 23%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 23/100 = part/3, so part = 23 × 3 ÷ 100 = 0.69. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =23%*3. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.69 is the 23% share of 3. The remaining 77% is 2.31, and the two parts add back up to 3.
Discounts: 23% off an item priced $3 saves $0.69, so you pay $2.31.
Adding and taking away 23%
Increasing 3 by 23% gives 3.69 and decreasing it by 23% gives 2.31. These do not cancel out: raising 3 by 23% and then lowering the result by 23% ends at 2.8413, because the second 23% is taken of a bigger number.
