How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 23 ÷ 100 = 0.23
  2. Multiply: 0.23 × 45 = 10.35
  3. Check: Work backwards: 10.35 ÷ 45 × 100 = 23%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 23/100 = part/45, so part = 23 × 45 ÷ 100 = 10.35. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =23%*45. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

10.35 is the 23% share of 45. The remaining 77% is 34.65, and the two parts add back up to 45.

Discounts: 23% off an item priced $45 saves $10.35, so you pay $34.65.

Adding and taking away 23%

Increasing 45 by 23% gives 55.35 and decreasing it by 23% gives 34.65. These do not cancel out: raising 45 by 23% and then lowering the result by 23% ends at 42.6195, because the second 23% is taken of a bigger number.
