How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 23 ÷ 100 = 0.23
- Multiply: 0.23 × 50 = 11.5
- Check: Work backwards: 11.5 ÷ 50 × 100 = 23%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 23/100 = part/50, so part = 23 × 50 ÷ 100 = 11.5. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =23%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
11.5 is the 23% share of 50. The remaining 77% is 38.5, and the two parts add back up to 50.
Discounts: 23% off an item priced $50 saves $11.5, so you pay $38.5.
Adding and taking away 23%
Increasing 50 by 23% gives 61.5 and decreasing it by 23% gives 38.5. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 23% and then lowering the result by 23% ends at 47.355, because the second 23% is taken of a bigger number.
