How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 23 ÷ 100 = 0.23
  2. Multiply: 0.23 × 75 = 17.25
  3. Check: Work backwards: 17.25 ÷ 75 × 100 = 23%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 23/100 = part/75, so part = 23 × 75 ÷ 100 = 17.25. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =23%*75. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

17.25 is the 23% share of 75. The remaining 77% is 57.75, and the two parts add back up to 75.

Discounts: 23% off an item priced $75 saves $17.25, so you pay $57.75.

Adding and taking away 23%

Increasing 75 by 23% gives 92.25 and decreasing it by 23% gives 57.75. These do not cancel out: raising 75 by 23% and then lowering the result by 23% ends at 71.0325, because the second 23% is taken of a bigger number.
