How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
- Multiply: 0.25 × 31 = 7.75
- Check: Work backwards: 7.75 ÷ 31 × 100 = 25%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/31, so part = 25 × 31 ÷ 100 = 7.75. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =25%*31. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
7.75 is the 25% share of 31. The remaining 75% is 23.25, and the two parts add back up to 31.
Discounts: 25% off an item priced $31 saves $7.75, so you pay $23.25.
Adding and taking away 25%
Increasing 31 by 25% gives 38.75 and decreasing it by 25% gives 23.25. These do not cancel out: raising 31 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 29.0625, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
