How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 31 ÷ 100 = 0.31
  2. Multiply: 0.31 × 25 = 7.75
  3. Check: Work backwards: 7.75 ÷ 25 × 100 = 31%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 31/100 = part/25, so part = 31 × 25 ÷ 100 = 7.75. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =31%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

7.75 is the 31% share of 25. The remaining 69% is 17.25, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 31% off an item priced $25 saves $7.75, so you pay $17.25.

Adding and taking away 31%

Increasing 25 by 31% gives 32.75 and decreasing it by 31% gives 17.25. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 31% and then lowering the result by 31% ends at 22.5975, because the second 31% is taken of a bigger number.
