How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
- Multiply: 0.25 × 380 = 95
- Check: Work backwards: 95 ÷ 380 × 100 = 25%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/380, so part = 25 × 380 ÷ 100 = 95. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =25%*380. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
95 is the 25% share of 380. The remaining 75% is 285, and the two parts add back up to 380.
Discounts: 25% off an item priced $380 saves $95, so you pay $285.
Adding and taking away 25%
Increasing 380 by 25% gives 475 and decreasing it by 25% gives 285. These do not cancel out: raising 380 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 356.25, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
