How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
  2. Multiply: 0.25 × 48 = 12
  3. Check: Work backwards: 12 ÷ 48 × 100 = 25%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/48, so part = 25 × 48 ÷ 100 = 12. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =25%*48. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

12 is the 25% share of 48. The remaining 75% is 36, and the two parts add back up to 48.

Discounts: 25% off an item priced $48 saves $12, so you pay $36.

Adding and taking away 25%

Increasing 48 by 25% gives 60 and decreasing it by 25% gives 36. These do not cancel out: raising 48 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 45, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
