How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
  2. Multiply: 0.25 × 92 = 23
  3. Check: Work backwards: 23 ÷ 92 × 100 = 25%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/92, so part = 25 × 92 ÷ 100 = 23. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =25%*92. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

23 is the 25% share of 92. The remaining 75% is 69, and the two parts add back up to 92.

Discounts: 25% off an item priced $92 saves $23, so you pay $69.

Adding and taking away 25%

Increasing 92 by 25% gives 115 and decreasing it by 25% gives 69. These do not cancel out: raising 92 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 86.25, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
