How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 250 ÷ 100 = 2.5
  2. Multiply: 2.5 × 5 = 12.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 12.5 ÷ 5 × 100 = 250%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 250/100 = part/5, so part = 250 × 5 ÷ 100 = 12.5. Both methods always give the same answer.
