How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 26 ÷ 100 = 0.26
  2. Multiply: 0.26 × 65 = 16.9
  3. Check: Work backwards: 16.9 ÷ 65 × 100 = 26%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 26/100 = part/65, so part = 26 × 65 ÷ 100 = 16.9. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =26%*65. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

16.9 is the 26% share of 65. The remaining 74% is 48.1, and the two parts add back up to 65.

Discounts: 26% off an item priced $65 saves $16.9, so you pay $48.1.

Adding and taking away 26%

Increasing 65 by 26% gives 81.9 and decreasing it by 26% gives 48.1. These do not cancel out: raising 65 by 26% and then lowering the result by 26% ends at 60.606, because the second 26% is taken of a bigger number.
