How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 26 ÷ 100 = 0.26
  2. Multiply: 0.26 × 90 = 23.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 23.4 ÷ 90 × 100 = 26%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 26/100 = part/90, so part = 26 × 90 ÷ 100 = 23.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =26%*90. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

23.4 is the 26% share of 90. The remaining 74% is 66.6, and the two parts add back up to 90.

Discounts: 26% off an item priced $90 saves $23.4, so you pay $66.6.

Adding and taking away 26%

Increasing 90 by 26% gives 113.4 and decreasing it by 26% gives 66.6. These do not cancel out: raising 90 by 26% and then lowering the result by 26% ends at 83.916, because the second 26% is taken of a bigger number.
