How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 28 ÷ 100 = 0.28
  2. Multiply: 0.28 × 10 = 2.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.8 ÷ 10 × 100 = 28%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 28/100 = part/10, so part = 28 × 10 ÷ 100 = 2.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =28%*10. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.8 is the 28% share of 10. The remaining 72% is 7.2, and the two parts add back up to 10.

Discounts: 28% off an item priced $10 saves $2.8, so you pay $7.2.

Adding and taking away 28%

Increasing 10 by 28% gives 12.8 and decreasing it by 28% gives 7.2. These do not cancel out: raising 10 by 28% and then lowering the result by 28% ends at 9.216, because the second 28% is taken of a bigger number.
