How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 28 ÷ 100 = 0.28
  2. Multiply: 0.28 × 50 = 14
  3. Check: Work backwards: 14 ÷ 50 × 100 = 28%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 28/100 = part/50, so part = 28 × 50 ÷ 100 = 14. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =28%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

14 is the 28% share of 50. The remaining 72% is 36, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 28% off an item priced $50 saves $14, so you pay $36.

Adding and taking away 28%

Increasing 50 by 28% gives 64 and decreasing it by 28% gives 36. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 28% and then lowering the result by 28% ends at 46.08, because the second 28% is taken of a bigger number.
