How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 28 ÷ 100 = 0.28
- Multiply: 0.28 × 6 = 1.68
- Check: Work backwards: 1.68 ÷ 6 × 100 = 28%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 28/100 = part/6, so part = 28 × 6 ÷ 100 = 1.68. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =28%*6. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.68 is the 28% share of 6. The remaining 72% is 4.32, and the two parts add back up to 6.
Discounts: 28% off an item priced $6 saves $1.68, so you pay $4.32.
Adding and taking away 28%
Increasing 6 by 28% gives 7.68 and decreasing it by 28% gives 4.32. These do not cancel out: raising 6 by 28% and then lowering the result by 28% ends at 5.5296, because the second 28% is taken of a bigger number.
